WHY SHOULD WOMEN CARE ABOUT SELF-DEFENSE?

"The biggest problem with woman’s self-defense is that most people don't really believe women can defend themselves". "But they can," says Grandmaster Adrian Roman. "The women have the necessary tools, but just have to reprogram themselves. I've spoken to women who have been assaulted and raped and they almost always say two things:" " I was scared and I should have fought back."

As a single parent raising a daughter, I realized the importance of teaching my then 12-year old some self-defense skills. It started with her wanting to have a little more freedom going to the malls and movie theater.  Being the protective father and knowing the potential dangers she might face,  we negotiated an agreement. I explained to her as her father, it would give me some peace of mind if she would learn some self-defense techniques. We agreed that if she would learn the first three belt levels in American Kenpo; yellow, orange and purple, that I would loosen the reins and give her more freedom. After obtaining these goals, and being the manipulative father, I dangle a set of car keys in front of her to go further into her training and achieve her Brown belt. If you are going to have more freedom, you are going to need your first car to get there.  After getting her Brown belt, I had her hooked and she continue her training without inducement from me. She received  her 1st  degree Black belt in 1995. Soon after that on a summer afternoon while running, a pair of stranger ran her down and attempted to pull her into a car. With the training she received she was able to fend them off and escape without injury. My daughter is barely 5’ 2” and 105 lbs. She’s a wonderful example that women can be successful when facing a much larger attacker provided they receive the proper training.

#1 YOU MUST FIRST BUY INTO THE NECESSITY OF LEARNING BASIC SELF-DEFENSE TECHNIQUES

Martial arts schools are filled with the wrong people and I’m not speaking about the instructors. Without a doubt, they should be filled with women and children. For the most part, the chance of  older males getting into a physical situation is slim. However the chance of women and children getting into a physical encounter is astronomical. Business women  are exposed when going to and from work. Stay at home moms are vulnerable while running errands with their children. Attending social functions or a night out at the movies can be dangerous. Statistics show that you can count on three encounters in your lifetime. For the most part women are in complete denial that something tragic will ever happen to them. Hello, get your head out of the sand and read the morning paper. We are all responsible for our own personal safety. You must change your list of priorities and put yourself at the top. Take care of  number one. Imagine this for a moment or until you get it, as Dr. Phil would say. ERASE YOURSELF and imagine the ramifications of what your loss might create to your love ones. Your decision to be without Self-Defense training is, without a doubt the single most important decision when factoring your long-term destiny. BE THERE.

#2 SHOULD I FIGHT BACK IN A PHYSICAL ENCOUNTER?

Should you and could you? It's virtually always better to fight back, particularly if you are trained in how to fight back appropriately. Women who fight back are injured less often, and are more successful in stopping the attack, regardless of what kind of attack it is. Woman feel a sense of empowerment and feel better about themselves afterwards. They are able to avoid the emotional and physiological scars that can last a lifetime.

"
I could never fight back."

Woman have a natural survival instinct built-in that they are not aware of.  Animals in the wild will protect there young at any cost and women are no different. You just have to reprogram yourself and think positively. Woman who've never been in a situation where they were pressured to fight often think that they couldn't fight, but rest assure, if you’re faced with a life or death situation, you will fight back.  However you need to have the proper tools and information in order for that instinct to be effective. Getting the proper training and proven information from the experts can be critical to overcoming that emotional resistance to fighting.

What can I learn in a few hours or days?

Women do natural and everyday movements that can be applied to training in self-defense. I can transfer a tremendous amount of information to you in just one hour. I can teach a half dozen solid techniques that you can take home that night and use if you are pressed into a situation. It's not necessary to take years of training in order to become an effective fighter. We will develop a personal protection plan that works for you. In a couple of hours or a few days, you can become proficient in a number of different techniques and learn something about how to apply them.

I have over 50 years of experience in the martial art and self-defense business. More important, I’m a loving parent that has concerns for the safely of my children, women and senior citizens. I can save you a lot of time and effort. I know what you are faced with when trying to decide if and when you should learn some form of self-defense. Adrian Roman
